If you think "working class" is white male auto workers who live in the suburbs, and not multiracial Starbucks baristas, Amazon warehouse workers, and Wal-Mart greeters of all genders, you are perpetuating a revanchist racist myth, the reality of which died with Reagan.

IMPORTANT: The website for Jonathan Mitchell's sock puppet org suing Northwestern for "bias against white men" is an open submission form asking for "evidence of race or sex preferences at any university you've been associated with." Just FYI! fasorp.org

The thing is, the Grand Canyon very clearly WASN’T made like that, because it has a V-shaped cross section, very consistent with slow erosion. The Scablands canyons though have a *square* cross-section just like when a river overflow cuts through the beach and runs down to the ocean

Okay but seriously, can you imagine? The rate of flow was higher than all rivers on earth. Combined! BY A FACTOR OF TEN!! This was happening during the same period when humans first showed up in the Americas. There were people here! People saw this happen! People like we are people!

I love this story as an intersection and union of geology and sociology, of ancient inexorable forces and hasty human squabbles, and as a reminder that the truth is always the truth, whether it’s convenient or not. Plus the landscape is just hella cool.

When they finally accepted that they were wrong and awarded him what I think of as the “I TOLD You So” medal (actually the Penrose Medal) in 1979 when he was 94, he said “All my enemies are dead, so I have no one left to gloat over.”

And they LITERALLY laughed at him at the Academy! The Geological Society sneered at him for promoting ideas they saw as connected to young-earth creationism and all but threw him out on his ear. The next fifty years of research then proved him to be pretty much spot on.

The geologist J Harlan Bretz realized in the 1920s that the parallel bands of low hills — you can see them at 19:40 in the video — looked like the ripples on the sandy bottoms of rivers, except HUGE. He proposed the idea that they were caused by cataclysmic floods instead of slow erosion.

But the thing about ice is that it melts, and even more so when it has that much water pressing on it, particularly because ice floats. And so eventually that ice dam would catastrophically fail, and that five hundred cubic miles of water would drain to the Pacific in a matter of days.

There were a ton of them, these floods. We don’t know how many. Basically part of a glacier would form an ice dam across the Clark Fork River, which would then back up and form Glacial Lake Missoula, which covered hundreds of square miles and was hundreds of feet deep. Like 500 cubic miles of water.

In all sincerity, the flood of supportive messages is lovely. I tell you what, donate what you would have sent to me to your local bail fund instead; the same system that exonerates powerful men without ever examining their conduct does exactly the opposite to those who lack that power.
