Fun fact, we celebrate Guy Fawkes in NZ too! (not with the stuffed dude, but we do the fireworks). Always thought it was a weird thing to celebrate.

Bonfires tend to be big popular community events with food trucks and a fireworks display but I feel like burning the Guy on it is really rare nowadays, not seen that since I was a little kid in the 90s. Seasonal foods like bonfire toffee and especially toffee apples still pretty popular though!

They still do, and some of it preserves the original violently anti-Catholic rhetoric of the original persecutions. The extreme right-wing make a feature of how "British" this is.
