Reform were kept to single digits in Jeremy Hunt’s constituency, lower than in any adjacent constituency. This probably made the difference in his result. Given Jeremy Hunt isn’t exactly a darling of the right, if I were a Conservative I’d be absorbed right now in how he did that.

i had a customer at work lecture me about how wearing a mask meant that I was still traumatized by the pandemic and I needed to "heal." well ma'am I'm going to find healing a lot easier if I don't have brain fog and fatigue from long covid

This conversation reminds me of when smokers used to justify why we should not complain about inhaling their second-hand smoke. The blowback when I objected was intense.

I don't know. The NYT (aside from your excellent work on the op-ed page) seems intent upon whitewashing and normalizing Trump. It seems very calculated and overt.

2. Labour held steady in total votes, but combined with the fractured vote on the right, won a historic parliamentary majority. This is in line with trends elsewhere in Europe. The far right rises and wins when the center-left atomizes (Italy, France) and falls short when it holds (Spain, Portugal).

Another dynamic worth noting is Labour has never won a majority without turnout dropping. In 1945, 1964, October 1974, 1997 and 2024 turnout was lower than in the previous defeat. And in 1964 and 2024 they got fewer votes. I do think there’s a type of British “Tory or nothing” voter…

A nice progressive move from Labour: apparently James Timpson is being given a peerage and made prisons minister. For non UK folk, his high street chain of key cutting and shoe repair shops has a policy of employing ex-convicts giving them decent jobs to avoid reoffending. It works.

A squire rushed in to the great hall.

"Someone," he shouted, "has taken the sword from the stone!"

The assembled knights halted their dinner.

"At last, a king?"

"Who?"

"I don't know," the squire said. "The sword is gone!"

"This," Indy muttered, "belongs in a museum.

But if you’re offering your opinion on UK politics & call him “Prime Minister Starmer”, it sounds like you don’t know much about UK politics 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think misplaced cynicism about election promises is causing a lot of people to work too hard on “why did the Tories lose so badly?” It’s not that deep: most parties keep at least 80 per cent of their pledges. This one…really the only one is that they didn’t raise VAT. How else was it gonna end?
