honestly hate that every time there's an industry bad actor, lists of "works by marginalized authors to support instead" start circulating like it's a moral obligation to be done out of guilt, & it's crickets every other day of the year. my art is not to be taken in as a reactionary measure

They don't have them by default, but a lot of games have ways to see them as you level up. Scan from the FF franchise is a notable example. Paper Mario has it as the first partner's ability, Tattle. And badges can reveal that info as well.

Using DQ11 as an example for the Final Boss it's recommended to be around level 50 for everyone and it'll still be a good challenge. But True Final boss recommends you be around level 70/80. FF15 expected you to be around 50 for the final boss as well. So for modern games, it's about the same.

Honestly less a fan of WRPGs overall, less because of the numbers in leveling/damage, and more because the stories and gameplay is never quite what I'm looking for. More a "not really for me" situation. Love what Larian is doing (BG3 & Divinity), loved classic Diablo, but never been a big WRPG fan.

Nah, DQ has been bad about it too. To level up the fastest EXP growth characters in Dragon Quest 11 you’ll need over 6 million EXP. Max player damage in DQ11 is 9999 per hit. To get Mario to level 99 in Paper Mario it’s 9900 EXP. Max damage in PMTTYD from Mario is 99.

Each singular point of attack in Paper Mario feels significant and meaningful. Locking level ups to 100 exp makes it simpler to understand. It’s just more fun this way tbh.

I really appreciate Paper Mario’s approach to RPG gameplay, and more than just the timing of attacks, specifically the low numbers for things. BIG NUMBER! BIG WOW! Is how things like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Breath of Fire, etc do things and it’s fun… but it’s kinda meaningless.

1. Existing development infrastructure can be reused. 2. Layoffs. Layoffs. Layoffs. 3. Investors dictating "what will sell" rather than anything else. 4. Sequels, Reboots, Re-makes, HD ports are "easier to sell."

Maybe I'm jaded but most of the "AAA" announced games from Summer Game Fest look like the exact same thing. The indie space continues to be pretty innovative, but the AAA stuff is like "copy-paste, re-release, sequel, reboot" with the same style and designs.

Going back and looking over classic consoles seen as “JRPG machines” and re-realizing that most aren’t. They just mostly have a bunch of (the same) Square Enix games released and re-released on them.
