I've seen a lot of grudgingly appreciative posts from self-declared non-supporters of Starmer, so I would say no, in answer to your question.

Ah, found it! The comparison was with the 2015 UKIP result, the best vote share achieved by a Fromage vehicle until this year. They got 12.4% of the vote (source: HoC Library) compared with 14.3% for RefUK in 2024.

...or mine are! I remember reading in several places that their vote was only up by about 1.8%, but perhaps the comparison was with 2017, not 2019... I'll try to find the source....

Interesting to note that only 36% of RefUK voters had Tories as their 2nd choice, 16% Labour...

When are they going to learn that the majority of the population aren't obsessed by immigration and simply want a country that works properly?

I suspect the unspoken comparison is with Johnson, Truss, RefUK and the swathe of Brexiters who ignore established norms of behaviour, or put the boot into institutions when it suits them

Who knows? But it wouldn't be true in the case of lifelong Arsenal fan and committed Sunday League player, Keir Starmer

Yes, it was the targeting strategy that won Lab the landslide. Be interesting to know what percentage of Lab/LD/SNP supporters voted tactically, too. The Greens had the best election in terms of proportional increase in share and seats. RefUK were less than 2% up on the 2019 Brexit Party share.

The Labour and Lib Dem campaigns sacrificed vote share to focus on effective vote distribution aimed at maximising seats. Hence why they didn't tend to campaign in each other's target constituencies, and why Labour in particular experienced lower vote share in its safe seats.

I think what constitutes "a plan" in the Tory mindset is very different to how most people understand it.

Yes. And some analysis on the effect of photo ID and if certain groups were disproportionately affected by it is also advisable before making simplistic assumptions about % vote

Good thread, Suw!
I suspect lower turnout was also related to voter ID rules and Tories staying home.

No! I was actually in Salisbury, which stayed true blue, but I was at the count and watching the national TV coverage with all the opposition teams. So, despite the local result, we were all exploding with excitement at what was unfolding

You also make sensible points and notes of caution are entirely justified. Bitter experience has made for a lot of cynicism. I'm going to do as the new PM suggests and judge the government on "actions not words".

I'm certainly no fan of "Cameron style austerity" but I also suspect any fiscal reset will have to happen incrementally to avoid the kind of crash we saw under Truss. And I sincerely hope the current government learns from the mistakes of its predecessors wrt private sector involvement

"Starmer has no vision"
a. I don't think that's correct: his vision has been to fix the UK to the benefit of all, and
b. I'm tired of idealogues being put into office who are blind to real people's needs, and have no ability to facilitate practical, positive improvements.

He promised change while being careful not to over-promise on the details. We've got to hope the changes he makes are to benefit the majority of people in the UK. Early signs are encouraging.
