This chart communicates pretty effectively why it's taking a while for the last 18 months of good solid economic conditions to fully take hold in people's minds— because look at the three years of chaos before that.

Through my childhood, on election nights, my dad was the man under Peter Snow’s desk putting interesting facts on notecards into his socks. That’s how it was done before Google, kids. You got a very clever ASD man with some Oxford degrees to just remember interesting constituency histories.

Exactly. If you burned a rug AND broke a window, and you are being scolded for burning a rug, don't try to change the topic. New "problems" always seem bigger than old "problems". In this case just embrace the Yoda image, and maybe remind that the VP exists for a reason. Do teamwork maybe.

But don't luxury goods technically have lower carbon footprint per $ spent, as you mostly pay for nothing, and nothing has no CO2 cost? (I mean, effectively it just pushes the effect of $ forward to the beneficiary of this business who can spend it on cars, of course, but they may also not?)

I just wanted to say that it's so refreshing to see you retweet good science again, bringing it to my feed, thank you for doing that! There was a half-a-year hiatus, almost, and it's so nice to be "back to normal" anyways :)) I'm so glad! :)

There were lots of juicy takes the first day, like, drone-strike this, or torture that, but I'm sure one can find something that is simultaneously not unethical, previously impossible (illegal?), but also not-social-collapse-inducing. Literally a warning shot. And publicly name Trump as enabler...

One can only hope. In a way I don't understand why Biden still haven't made a warning shot in the air for the right-wing crowd, just to give them the idea. Do something obviously NEW, then give a press-conference and say: your candidate just enable that. Do you like it? Not for him, but in general?

This sounds like a really weird system. Probably still better than the US, but so many votes are wasted, and wasted so inelegantly, no wonder the participation is low and huge swings are possible...

One of my favorite topics for a scientific paper: the emergence of individuality in genetically identical animals. This one takes advantage of the fact that nine-banded armadillos, which are raised for studies of leprosy, give birth to monozygotic quadruplets (!) www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I figured there are plenty of reasons for that, but still, technically, for an outsider, it's a wild arrangement!

Another weirdest TIL tidbit about UK politics I didn't know: so they have regional parties (Welsh, Scottish, Irish), but of these, apparently, the Irish party never actually joins the parliament? To send a FU message! They win seats, and ignore them. Just wow.

I don't even understan UK politics, but these concession speeches look fun! (For the left photo, click on it and look on the sides, the best stuff is on the sides!)

The orange dude is in progressive Wernicke aphasia stage for years. He was fine in the 90s, if you listen to old recordings, but even in his first campaign was half-there, and only got worse since (sharks?). I know it's bad tone to "diagnose remotely", but the words don't lie.
