Really scary part is listening to the speech in the movie of the event.
They're using the same language
"We want our country back" etc.

That's suboptimal.
Here in Aus, I roll in whenever I'm due.
No wait, cos people think "it's over" and aren't lining up, also no charge - cos we're a bunch of commie socialists*
*I'm ok with that.

My builder assumed I'd be ordering a charcoal grey roof on an extension.
Why? Well that's what everyone's doing now ...
Nah mate. Give us the closest thing to white.
And it works very well in summer heat (sub tropics).
But yeah, seems dark roofs are "fashionable". Quite a few round here. Crazy.

Gotta wonder how much of the JRM thing was a performative response to knowing his grandfather was a truck driver.
An essential and skilled occupation, for sure, but probably not one known for their employment of nannies and such.

My theory is that politics is just a measure of empathy.
About 30% of every population is low empathy.
Eg from the 1932 Reichstag elections to the Australian plebiscite on marriage equality, there's a consistent 30% vote just hating on people.
Anyway, that's just like, my opinion man.

I've taken the measure of living in Australia just so I see this through for everyone who can't stay up.
Remember, even if he stays, he'll be an ongoing reminder of what they stood for...

Australian version is the One Nation party and its various iterations.
And yes, it splits the RW vote but unfortunately it has also pushed the major parties here further right.

Reminds me of the rise and fall (hopefully) of one nation in the Qld parliament.
In 1998 they picked up almost a quarter of the vote and held more seats than the liberal party.
Queensland 🤦♂️

I see Rees Mogg has moved from likely to be flushed, to 50/50 floater.
I'm not going to bed til I see a result (not a hard ask, it's 0935 here 😉)

Often think about my Eurasian-Australian acquaintance who emigrated to the UK, obtained citizenship, got a job, family, settled right in.
Then voted for brexit to "stop all those foreigners coming here", while living in one of the least diverse towns there.
My dude.....

I can still recall the lyrics to "The Thargomindah Track".

As a school kid in the 70s, we had singing accompanied on the piano by an elderly lady who could belt out hot hits of the1920s.
To this day, despite my Aus upbringing, I still know the lyrics to "California Here I Come" and "Yankee Doodle Dandee"
Anyhoo, happy July 4 to those who celebrate it.

Look at the NYT, thinking they'll be able to just get on with business as usual under a dictatorship.
You're actively enabling the end of your own democracy, you clowns.

Just wondering what a fascist regime in the US will be like.
Power centralised, cronyism, corruption, loss of environment/workplace protections. Persecution of minorities. Religious zeal.
International power vacuum, boost to Putin, rise of China, withdrawal from treaties.
Crikey. Good luck.

Australia has a PR system, compulsory voting, an independent Electoral Commission and we vote on weekends. Plus, we get a sausage sizzle.
Good for keeping the 1/3rd in check (they still sneak into our senate but)

It's been noted before, but it seems consistent that a 3rd of any population would happily subjugate/oppress/murder another 3rd but are normally kept in check by the other 3rd.
Tip the scales a little and boom, full fash in a heartbeat.

Mind you, we don't see a lot of him.

She says "I can't believe they're going to put it onto us to sell vapes!"
Other fellow there said "Well, have you just considered not selling them?"
Get that man a beer....
