That didn't seem like a realisation, just her stating a thing she's always believed about herself? Whereas the "I just like gay porn" addendum to the later moment seems like a denial-related gag.

Oh, that's the moment I thought we'd been talking about this whole time. What were you originally referring to then? Her rejecting PJ's attempt to kiss her?

How does it reiterate her heterosexuality? I haven't seen it since it was in cinemas.

Really? I've always read that as a joke about her being in denial, especially given she's never even flirted with non-heterosexuality until that point.

Right? Like, even apart from the makeup and Photoshop and so on, I've only once in my entire life seen her look worse than this.

I mean, I could kinda buy "no makeup" just because it's impossible to tell what's going on under all that Photoshop, but it sure as shit doesn't look natural. And it's a magazine cover, under studio lighting, of course she has makeup on. It's also the second-worst I've ever seen her look.

All the streamers have started to pivot in the last year or so because they're learning subs aren't a sustainable model. Netflix and Prime now have ads. Max is removing content to license it to others.

Pointing to a movie from over 30 years ago doesn't say much about what can get made in 2024.

The entire point of this strategy is to prevent that (you can't binge everything in a month and then unsub, each month has new content you want to see).

She is largely unafflicted by good taste. Her other takes include "Fabelmans was the most boring film I've ever seen," "Abbott and Costello aren't funny," and "I would never shop at that store, the most expensive things they have are only $2,000."

My stepmother legit switched the movie off halfway through because "it's just about how girls can be anything they want, and we already know that, this movie sucks." That's, y'know, THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT THE MOVIE IS SAYING. And wouldn't make it a bad movie anyway.

He made like five different versions of his own autobiography and a film that ripped off The Pilgrim and Roseanne. I'm unconvinced by Musser's arguments re: the latter, given the former.

There has never been a time when only one film stock was available. And it's still not a license to digitally ruin the movie later.

The correct solution is to shoot on different stock, not to ruin the picture afterwards.

Most people watched pan and scan transfers and thought they were pretty good. Most people insist on watching mono films with 5.1 or even Atmos soundtracks. Most people are wrong.

They do not look anything approaching "fine". The Aliens Blu-ray looks vastly better, which defeats the film stock argument handily.

I saw Metropolis with live organ accompaniment and it was the single worst film experience of my life. Huge spotlight on the organist the entire film. House lights came up to emphasise every dramatic moment. Flashing colored lights during action scenes. Film lasted less than 2 hours.

This is only true if you count this as the start of the movies. It gets pretty question-beggy, really. Plenty of room to argue theatrical exhibition is key, therefore anything without it falls into a different category. Or go with the Theatre Opaque or magic lantern shows as the starting point...

At least they had an intermission. When I saw Branagh's Hamlet, the "intermission" card came up and the movie just kept right on going. Several people walked out, unaware there wasn't actually a break.

We legit sat there for OVER HALF AN HOUR before what is already a long movie, with it starting up, playing for five seconds, switching off...over and over. When they finally figured it out, they started it from the end of the credits.

Eyes Wide Shut played at my local indie last month. The cinema's website listed it at 187 minutes, which is...wildly wrong. The same cinema kept rebooting their projector at the start of Lawrence of Arabia because there was no picture. 🤷♂️

The people who made Threads made it because they thought The Day After was too optimistic. And experts generally consider Threads to be an absolute best-case scenario.

I have noticed that my most popular reviews are all negative. But I think that's also partly because I can express why I didn't like a film better than I can express why I did like a film, and my positive reviews tend to turn into dull academic essays.

Progress is continuum and those in power will push back every step of the way. But again, much of the institutional power here is held by Mattel. Which is run by men.
