We can't really control feelings. I do my best to acknowledge feelings of envy & don't judge myself for them. Experience has shown that I get over them & will have successes of my own.
Then I focus on the things that I *can* control: my reaction, and my art skill level.

From left to right: Hubert de Burgh, Robert Fitzwalter, King John and William Marshall.
I illustrated these medieval English warriors - among others - for the exhibition "Dover Castle Under Siege" which is about that particular episode in 1216 CE.

This is the kind of illustration I've always wanted to do: detailed paintings of historical scenes!

My Photoshop brushes are available for free download again!
This set is super versatile and will work even in older PS versions. Should work in Clip Studio Paint and Procreate too.

Thank you! I'd like to share my Photoshop brushes, but I'm still looking for a platform where I can share an .abr file for free download that isn't Gumroad or doesn't require you to make/have an account. Suggestions welcome :)

I love painting ships. These are all done relatively quickly (about 1-2 hours each) in Photoshop. π

... and what if potential future clients want an easy way to make sure of that?
Other online platforms can serve that purpose too. If you're on the fence about deleting any... maybe still wait for a bit. No one knows what the future will bring. Just my 2 cents.

I see some artists deleting their Instagram.
I'm not doing that because Instagram is a practical time-stamped record of my work going back 2022 and earlier, before the current AI image generators.
It might come in handy if someone ever doubts my work as a human artist ...

I need artists to understand that Cara isn't trying to be a social media site. It's a spiritual successor to ArtStation, a gallery site with a focus on industry art and artists.
It's ok to be cynical & cautious, but please be fair in your expectations and dismissals.

...Always stop when your hand hurts (better yet, don't get to that point). Drink a lot of water while drawing so you'll be forced to get up some time to go to the loo etc.
If you can take care of these things your art career is more likely to be sustainable. π

3. Not investing in physical health. Art is a sedentary job which can be tough on the body, as many people eventually notice in their 30s-40s. Find a sport you enjoy or at least don't have to force yourself too hard to do, do it 3x/week. Eat a healthy diet...

2. Related: lack of life outside the job. "Life inspires art" sounds trite but it's true. You need time with family/friends/pets, go out to see & do stuff, travel if possible, playtime, just fun in general, non-art hobby, etc. This recharges your creative mind.

1. Taking on so much client work that you never have time for your personal art for months and years at a time. (If you're that busy, it's a signal to raise your prices.) Time for personal creative work is needed to remind yourself why you love creating in the first place.

Same. If I know that the result is gonna be like 50% bullshit so I have to do my own research and fact-check whatever ChatGPT hallucinates anyways, what's the point? I can just skip it and go straight to possible sources
