Carlos Santana of the Minnesota Twins should use his middle initial, so that no one confuses him with the rock legend of the same name.

Fritzi is Nancy's permanent guardian. So anytime you see a lady call Nancy in for dinner or whatever, that's her.

It doesn't matter at all, except as a measure of how vapid they are. They seem to be zealous of the prestige of the Court, despite being the exact cause of its waning. I guess if I were remaking society by decree, I'd have fewer illusions about what I was doing?

I'm sure the majority felt that way in Bush v Gore as well. That these acts of elevated statesmanship always benefit their side is just a coincidence I guess (not that you are wrong, just that one must have the mind of a toddler for their vanity and self-interest to align so effortlessly)

I am not at all certain of that. What I deeply suspect is that the choice matters less than people think (though the absolute stakes have never been higher, since the Civil War at least).

I wouldn't worry too much about Kamala if Biden bows out; the deciders will be convention delegates previously bound to Biden, and they are almost certain to come together around her. The other names proposed (eg Whitmer, Newsom) are as well very unlikely to challenge her.

The existential threat of a Trump presidency is the precise reason for the panic, at least among those who sincerely want Trump to lose. If it were an ordinary Republican nominee, people would be more inclined to take the loss in stride.

There's a silver lining in this Biden freakout: it takes as a premise that a Trump presidency would be a civic emergency. Otherwise, sometimes Democrats win, sometimes Republicans, not a crisis either way!

Most of these hickville gentry won't throw their quite comfortable lives away to overthrow the Republic. But if the Supremes continue to rule in their favor, they won't have to.

I don't see that at all. I think Biden's age is a real concern, albeit with low-info voters who fail to view Trump as an existential threat. The ones who won't vote for a black lady are, by contrast, mere MAGAs willing to ignore Trump's own noticeable cognitive decline.

Unlike with ordinary cabinet and judiciary nominees, both houses are required to confirm a vice-president under the 25th Amendment. Both Gerald Ford and Nelson Rockefeller underwent this confirmation process.

I mean *I* would vote for Jamie Dimon over Donald Trump in a Wall Street minute, but Trump would earn 400 EVs in such a contest.

There are only a few tipping-point states that matter: Nevada and Arizona come to mind as places where extremist Republicans are entrenched. Obviously all kinds of resources, legal, messaging, GOTV, will be needed in such states.

Biden should absolutely cite, at least in passing: that the House majority is corrupt, would not fill the veep vacancy, and that the incoming President would thus not be safe.

Mike Johnson will absolutely not bring a confirmation vote to the floor, as long as he himself is first in the line of succession. And as long as he is, Kamala's life isn't worth 20¢. That's why Biden can't resign, for all practical purposes (though quitting the race is absolutely a live option)

The Supreme Court majority is composed of of people puffed up with arrogance, entirely unmerited, and clearly they believe that they can refashion the country in their image without much social unrest or friction, let alone open rebellion.

One problem among many with Biden resigning now is that there is no way that a replacement VP would be seated, Mike Johnson would be first in the order of succession, and Kamala Harris' life would be in constant peril.

The endorsement of the moderate-lane candidates (of which Harris was one) mattered less than their simply exiting the race. Bernie stans were mostly mad that Warren stayed in a bit longer, meaning Biden could consolidate his lane but Bernie had to fight for his. Warren didn't endorse Biden until May

The outcome of dubious legitimacy would have been for Bernie (or anyone) to be the nominee while securing 30% or less of the total vote.

Harris would be eligible for 2 full terms even if she took office tomorrow, since it's past the halfway point of this term (LBJ, under the same rules, was eligible in 1968 but chose not to run)

It really shouldn't matter who the Democratic candidate is, as only an insane person would vote for Trump despite believing that doing so risked the end of democracy. Clearly not enough people think so, but then I can't see how a candidate swap heightens the sense of urgency?

Yes, a D+24 district in a purple state is absolutely bad for Dems statewide, even without the complicity of Dem members of Congress.

Seriously: Dershowitz has floated the standard that anything a president does to hold onto power is an official act, because a president might sincerely believe that his reelection is a matter of national security. Sounds like something SCOTUS might adopt, for GOP presidents anyway.

They ruled in favor of Brown because our national prestige in a Cold War context depended on us not being an apartheid regime. They ruled in favor of Miranda because cops were coercing confessions out of detainees. They were not left-wing crusaders, as some seem to think (not you, obv)

Biden seemed to be wrong-footed the worst when trying to rebut a fusillade of Trump's lies and bullshit. At 50-something, I would find it exasperating and exhausting to parry all of that. It's a unique and artificial situation that has nothing to do with governing, and little to do with campaigning.
