Mink belong to the weasel family. But the species usually called "weasels" in the U.S. tend to have light brown fur with white/tan chests/bellies. This looks like a mink. Ask your neighbor to show you a picture of the species of weasel he thinks he saw. Or could he have seen a different animal?

This mink looks so much like my ferrets that I just want to hug it and give it treats and scritches... but my understanding is that wild mink are not QUITE as friendly as domesticated ferrets.

I find that mink are a lot more common than many people realize. I've probably seen them around twenty times in the last two or three years, but many people are surprised when I tell them they're around. (I live on the Washington-Idaho border.)

(This turkey was NOT with the chick I spotted, I'm not as close as the 600mm lens makes it seem, and the turkey didn't actually want to fight. It just flapped its wings a bit as it turned around.)

Thanks! We have quite a few of them here in winter, but I don't spot them often in summer. They move out about the same time the osprey move in -- which may be a good thing because the few times I've seen osprey and eagles in the same spot, they were NOT getting along.
