Wellness is another area where this is rampant! And food-as-wellness.

Agreed. And I will keep this phrasing in mind as well because I find it very helpful.

Thank you. That’s mostly what I assumed you meant but I really appreciate you giving more info.

Would you be willing to tell me more about Asian inspired recipes white people? I am a white person who puts recipes on a non-monetized personal blog. If I post a recipe where I’ve taken a traditional recipe and modified it, I might call “inspired” so I don’t pretend it’s “authentic”.Is that worse?

You know I learned “the devil is beating his wife” from the guide on a walking tour of the Palais des Papes in Avignon, France (in French, of course). I’ve never heard it in the US

This is the sort of shit it takes to get many men even somewhat willing to discuss their role in the mental load and household tasks and it infuriates me. I’m a huge fan of tools and systems but much of this reads as trying to make it palatable to men to do their share and that is gross to me.

Same for Airbnb but it makes it all meaningless and prevents people from being able to give honest feedback without being the asshole. I resent being manipulated into giving 5 stars. And of course you’re also rated back so there’s a gross dynamic there too.

My latest revelation about Persuasion is that Austen describes the Basic Bitch centuries earlier than the terminology came about, or at least the superiority that one who does not fit in sometimes feels over those who fit in extremely well.

If not I could certainly recommend my teen who wrote an extra essay voluntarily just to critique haidt’s piece in the Atlantic

In case you missed it, Calm just rolled out a playlist feature and for our household of folks who take longer than one sleep story to fall asleep, this is game-changing stuff! No more having to set an alarm to start a new story for the kiddos

The first car I ever did a double-take upon viewing for its ugliness was the Pontiac Aztec. I kind of feel like the Cybertruck is the modern equivalent but much dumber, much uglier and much more expensive

Agree wholeheartedly. Only caveat it ensuring equity in travel times to integrated schools. Long commutes impact academics and ability to do extracurriculars. Also should be paired with universal school meals (breakfast too—commuting kids will be starving even if they already ate).

Definitely treat yourself to the Mapp & Lucia books by EF Benson if you haven’t already read them. They got a J&W vibe and their wickedly funny and everyone is awful but also wonderful and Georgie wears capes

Same! I can’t even remember now how I found it but my jaw has dropped so many times. A really solid listen, somehow joyful even though they’re exposing grifters.

Immensely proud of my teen who developed a year-end project for AP US History using the characterization of Captain America as an illustration of the political landscape from the 40s to today. Essentially the creators made Cap what we needed him to be and that differed over time. (Comics not MCU)

I know you may not feel this way about it, but for those of us who need love and cuteness desperately right now, it feels like Providence that just as you let one sweetie go another one comes that we get to pro-socially enjoy. Thank you for all you and thank you for sharing!

Honestly, read-aloud with my kids have been so instructive! Nothing really shows you the problems of Little House like saying (or not saying) those words aloud. Likewise realizing just how very trash then men are in Jane Eyre. How had I forgotten St John!!

Also, let me say that I read them with my now-teen when she was a tween and reading Emily’s Quest aloud is even squirmier than reading it myself as a tween. My kid was utterly horrified but it was a great bonding experience and provided excellent discussion fodder

Georgie Pillson from the EF Benson Mapp & Lucia books. I mean he’s *obviously* gay but it can’t be openly acknowledged. My teen and I are having the best time with him (bedtime read-aloud) and enjoying all the times that “gay” is used in a 1930s way but fits for 2024 queers. Highly recommended

We have a marked crosswalk near our house 2/3 of the way up a hill. There is no traffic light, so we rely on cars seeing peds and stopping. I monitor my tween’s crossing because cars zoom through on the regular. Sometimes I glare at drivers to force them to stop. Today I did this… to a cop
