NYC, Gen X, frittering away my time reading about politics and watching clever videos made by zoomers
That’s not true. Biden is not on any ballots yet because he is not the nominee, he is only the presumptive nominee until he is voted for by the delegates.

Name recognition is built thru campaigns. Since the election is decided in 6 states, a nominee who is well know regionally has a head start. In our age of an inundation of news and content delivered thru our ever present phones, it would not take long to be known nationally.

I was taking about the sort of primaries we would have had if Biden had decided not to run again

I wasn’t talking about the process in the universe we are in now (ie after the rubber stamp primaries we had). I was talking abt what a real primary process might have yielded, & my belief that running a successful 2 term Midwestern moderate swing state governor would be the best way to crush Trump

This is fantasy baseball but when I play the game of what could real primaries have given us, I imagine Whitmer could have given Harris a serious run for her money, and we shouldn’t have been afraid of a contest between Harris and other options. Probably right about Warnock though. How about Booker?

No idea how you would ever get there at this point but I think if there had been real primaries we might well have ended up with one of these tickets. One of them is what party bosses would have done in the old days.

Too bad our stubborn selfish candidate cannot be intelligible on the subject!! Amazing he’s losing with the ability to speak with eloquence in response to a debate question about abortion (this was his second try, in the first pass he started taking about migrant rape/murder)

Eh, I feel kinda certain that the best bet to win would be some combo of popular politicians from the swing states: Whitmer/Shapiro, Whitmer/Warnock, Kelly/Shapiro etc. These tickets would take MI WI PA AZ and GA in various winning combinations. Don’t you think?

Aren’t we? I think Biden should step aside for the good of the country. I don’t have the impression that is your view.

Come on. Biden said he was running. It’s hard to beat an incumbent president in the primaries & ppl didn’t want to weaken the presumptive nominee. THEN we all got some new information from the debate - the president is not capable of campaigning AND is losing badly And has no way to turn it around

Too bad the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party can no longer draw a contrast on this subject. Biden now rails against “party elites” and his supporters blame the media for their coverage of his biggest liability.

I’m a partisan democrat in a blue state. Since 2016 I’ve postcards to voters in other states to get out the vote. Watching Biden act like every other selfish politician has really damaged my enthusiasm for him, a president I have considered the best in my life time. I will still volunteer but…

Right that’s the problem, everyone is being unfair to Biden by expecting him to be ideal. It couldn’t possibly be that people accepted it wasn’t ideal that he’s 81 but had thought he could clear the relatively low bar of appearing to be alive and speaking intelligibly, but now we’ve learned he can’t

Yes Biden has a great record of accomplishments. Unfortunately he has shown himself to be too old to campaign effectively. 2024 is not 2020. Past performance is no guarantee of how Biden will perform in the coming months. His performance in the 10 days since the debate has done nothing to reassure

Why are you ok with running a man whom 75% of Americans believe is unfit for office? How can Biden make the case against Trump? “You’re unfit for office because you’re a criminal” “you’re unfit for office because you can only perform the job between 10am and 4pm!”

Friends disagreeing over where to have a meal is a trivial way of talking about a political party that must pick its best candidate in order to prevent the rise of fascism

Biden is the nominee bc we voted LACKING important information. You want to coronate Harris with a similar lack of information — how will she perform? Primaries wld have been the best way to get this info but it is a month til the convention, enuf time to put a handful of top Dems thru their paces.

Do you have a substantive argument to make on the question of how the Democratic Party should proceed with regards to the incapacity of its presumptive nominee?

I don’t understand your question. The senior leadership of the party wants Biden to step aside. What strong voices support Biden continuing his campaign?? There is no magic process but there are better candidates!!

General elections are not won by winning your base. I thought the base of the democrat party was vote blue no matter who. Those are not the voters you should be worried about!

I’d like to see you go door to door in a swing state explaining to voters who hate the choice they are being offered that they should vote for your half dead guy because the other guy is such a big threat to democracy. Do you really think that is going to get people to the polls?

I think it’s more politically advantageous for sure. We can debate another time whether a rubber stamp primary more democratic than this option. It would *help* Harrris as a candidate because it would protect her for some weeks from the full weight of this scandal (ie Biden’s hidden deterioration)

Americans are very very clear they do not like this re-run of 2020. They do not want to be asked to choose between dementia and degeneracy. “You’re unfit because you’re a criminal.” “You’re unfit because you can’t stay up past 8pm!” Very uplifting.

If you can’t understand why that debate and the weak effort to turn things around in the days that followed have rendered Biden unelectable I don’t know what to tell you. He would be losing right now by double digits against Nikki Haley or any normal Republican.

Try to imagine 4-5 of our best younger governors and senators on TV every night talking about the Party’s vision for the future and attacking Trump. 3 weeks of total focus on our terrific bench. Trump totally sidelined with no one to attack at his own convention.

There is no question that Biden must step aside for the good of the country. Why is the call for some kind of open convention automatically labeled “forcing Harris” off the ticket? She would be in the running! Why is it hers by fiat? She has receive not one single vote to be the nominee for prez

Since Trump is a sociopathic fascist wouldn’t you want to run your strongest candidate who could provide every possible contrast? Biden is losing right now — what’s the plan for winning? Making it a choice election? Between dementia and degeneracy? Americans don’t want this choice!

Why would you want to run a stumbling old man against someone whose biggest weakness is that he is manifestly unfit for the office? How can Biden effectively make the argument in the fall that Trump is unfit for office when Biden is ALSO unfit if for an entirely different reason?

This is who I think would have won the primaries if Biden had said he wasn’t running again. She would win MI and WI easily. It honestly really sucks that it’s a very long shot for her to be the nominee. But if you’re a political junkie you will enjoy this interview:

Well now you’re making things up. Many eligible democrats did not run! Our best governors and senators didn’t run because they didn’t want to damage the president if he was going to run. That was really Biden’s decision. When he said he was running that was it. No one was going to challenge him.

We are fighting fascism but we are incapable of having a convention in which 4700 delegates from 50 state parties consider their options and vote for the best person to win against the fascist. Why would anyone vote for such a useless party?!

I don’t understand why it must be a brawl. Does everyone not see the danger? Haven’t we all been talking for months and months how fucking dangerous Trump is? But when it comes to selecting the best nominee and rallying behind that person — oh no that would never work we are not a functional party

Nobody voted for Harris to be the presidential nominee. They voted for Biden to be the nominee. If he steps aside then a new nominee must be selected. The primaries were a rubber stamp in the absence of any of the several Dems of stature who would have run if Biden hadn’t

No she wasn’t. She is the VP because Biden chose her. She never won a single vote on her own. What is more important? Winning or honoring some imaginary line of succession. She would be very well positioned to win at the convention but it should be a contest. I want this bc I want to win in Nov.
