Postdoc position! Project involves experimental evolution + multi-generational selection analyses but plenty of room to explore candidate's interests in popgen and biochemistry projects.

Okay now I’m very confused because Fiji is the furthest East for me as I have not yet been to the Cape. West is Rarotonga.

No, I don't think you got it wrong. I was just trying to understand E/W. N/S is easy.

Happy to announce that Kristýna Šemberová will be joining the team as a postdoc this Fall, looking into reproductive isolation/interference, and possibly variation in genome size, in a group of closely related Lobelia species. 🎉

I once did speak with a reporter from the Chronicles of Higher Ed, thinking that the article would be about my advisor’s science. It wasn’t. So that was the last time for me.

Maybe so for talks. But when I was an undergrad a Prof was describing Joe Connell’s work on factors controlling barnacle distribution. He asked who had done the work. I got close (McConnell). He said acknowledging who did the work was important because science didn’t fall from the sky. People do it.

Everyone around us is fine. Neighbor’s pin oak lost a huge, healthy branch. It took out his deck and missed the house. But this gigantic oak will have to come down - a gapping wound in the main trunk, in a tree that could decimate his house if it were to fall.

Hey #Botany2024 peeps! My student Sam is giving a talk on Monday 8:00 am in Gallery Overlook F. It’s his 1st ever conference talk!!! He’s a little worried no one will show up bc it’s the 1st talk on the 1st day! If you have nothing else planned, can you come show some support? 🌸

Close to the 19th anniversary of moving up from the basement lab to the new first-floor lab (before and current state photos). Rather than wait a full 2 decades I think I'll tidy up now.

Massachusetts folks: I’ve been seeing a TON of this plant everywhere. This is black-swallowort, which is super invasive as well as poisonous to some animals and butterflies. It also grows super fast and crowds out other plants. Plant experts ask that you uproot and destroy it:

Do you work in ecology/evolution? Did you do a study that is too small to publish as a full manuscript? Negative results? Part of a larger effort? Consider publishing in microPublication Biology: EEB!

I use silk glove liners, designed to be worn under ski gloves/mittens. Super light. I just cut the finger tips off. Keeps off both the sun and mosquitoes!

Got to go fishing with 3 of my favorite people. And I caught 8 fish with my new rod, picked out by my good friend Doug Schemske. Here’s a photo near the boat launch as we were heading out just after sunrise. This bridge connects Apalachicola with Eastpoint, FL
