I think, in this specific scenario, there is a big fear that, if there is a conflict between the federal United States government and the Texas state government over what Texas is doing in terms of the border and/or deportations, the majority in the United States might side with Texas.

Many in that majority siding with Texas largely having the mindset that Texas is trying to deal with a major "crisis" head on and aggressively while the United States is blocking them from doing so, exasperating the "crisis" in the process.
