As someone who has come to believe that history very much has rhymed throughout human civilization, I increasingly worry the United States is going to become to our times what Nazi Germany was to the 1930s and 1940s, complete with both ending up in complete ruins by the end.

And that, Ryan is when I believe the purity spiral could easily begin if it does. The right wing gins up about a fifth column, begins weeding out dissent even among non-portesters, only leading to more outrage leading to more right wing paranoia and more cleansing.

I've read quite a few about how the GOP is going to turn this country into Russia and Hungary. However, a lot of what has been done and said is pointing to something at least a bit more extreme than those countries and one I don't think will last long.

I do understand that a chaotic downfall will have at least almost entirely downsides. My point is that, if the right wing authoritarians think they can cleanse their way into their vision of utopia, I'm sorry but that isn't happening.

The only upside is that slaughter of such magnitude would dramatically increase the likelihood of a regime being overthrown or collapsing quite a bit, especially if members of the powerful become victims.

I think that might be underselling it as I increasingly worry a second Trump term has a possibility, probably small but still non-negligible, of unleashing a genocide and politicide that will leave millions if not tens of millions killed to ensure right wing supremacy.

Of course. I do feel the focus of the election could easily shift to Kamala if worries become that Biden might die or become incapacitated as President. On one hand, she is even less popular as Biden. On the other, replacing her would lead to a more bitter fight than one to replace Biden.

Personally, I think a pivot should be made behind the scenes to seriously discuss plans if Biden were to die or become so incapacitated that he would have to resign. Also, do you think Kamala is in the same boat as Biden in that she can't be replaced as of this point in time?

A smarter right wing authoritarian regime I could see this as the goal. However, given what we've heard and read about GOP party figures inside and outside closed doors, I feel a large chunk actually want to do mass deportations and armed conflict with Mexico.

This is the new showrunner by the way. The old one was announced to be axed by December which, give how long it takes to make a cartoon, means they were making the key decisions of at least this first batch of episodes unless they were actually axed long before this announcement.

To be honest, I feel one of the better things that could happen to social media in the near future is Ex-Twitter doing the digital equivalent of the Day of the Rope by doing something like forcing everyone to either explicitly pardon allegiance to White Nationalism or be banned.

Majority of folks at least a modicum clocked into politics. What I was saying was a guess as to at least a reason why the Biden Administration is acting the way it is regarding Texas and SCOTUS regarding immigration.

Many in that majority siding with Texas largely having the mindset that Texas is trying to deal with a major "crisis" head on and aggressively while the United States is blocking them from doing so, exasperating the "crisis" in the process.

I think, in this specific scenario, there is a big fear that, if there is a conflict between the federal United States government and the Texas state government over what Texas is doing in terms of the border and/or deportations, the majority in the United States might side with Texas.

I would argue it was only the Bernie campaign and, to a smaller extent, Obama in 2008, that showed the viability of progressivism or leftism when it came to capturing the presidency. And don't get me started on what narrative the GOP wins in Congress in 1994 and 2010 created I feel.

In 1988, Bush turned a polling loss into a healthy win against Dukakis. As for Clinton, the first Dem to become president since Carter, he ran to what was the center at the time openly and many feel he only won because of Perot sucking away Bush voters.

I think it's more than just that. From 1968 until 1988, the Democrats only won the presidential election once. In the 1980s Reagan won first pretty healthily then in a landslide running against a 40-something year old New Deal Consensus and allying with a religious right, seen then as more fringe.

Oh and there is a good chance we would be at war with our southern neighbor and biggest trading partner. No, I don't see such a regime lasting long unless the economy prospers continuously or the regime absolutely annihilates all opposition, which would destroy America's prosperity certainly. 5/5

Unless the economy is prospering, I don't see the majority of the populace tolerating a regime for long that enacts a string of very unpopular policies, some which will have an immediate negative effect on countless Americans, attempts to eliminate multiple groups of people, some which have 2/x

Depends on how well the overall economy goes and, if the economy doesn't continuously go great for a good chunk of Americans, what replaces the MAGA regime. Not to diminish what a Trump second term would do but I have doubts it'll lay the foundations for a stable and long term authoritarian regime.

Also, the document pretty much all but explicitly says that its defining of porn includes all expressions and public displays of being transgender. Good chance they'll try it but millions are going to resist arrest and millions more their favorite shows and movies being censored or banned.
