SQL Server geek, college football and basketball fan, and my happy place is Shem Creek in Charleston, SC. Also, I became a cat person at some point. They won me over with their cuteness.

The big weakness with Iowa that I saw in the game against LSU, and I'm already seeing it today, is they miss a LOT of point blank shots. They missed probably 10 layups against LSU. They have already missed two layups in today's game.

This sounds awful for your little animal! Hopefully the issue can be definitively located.

@pgrayson.bsky.social When I've used VMware, then all nodes on an AG were sized the same.

Interesting tool I didn't know about. We have cloud VMs sized differently to save money by not running the same large size on the secondary as on the primary. None of them have automatic failover enabled. I was trying to find out if others do something similar.

That's great. Query tuning is a great topic to focus on, especially as the cloud pushes tech toward managed services.

And I learned that flightaware is a thing. I never had thought about wanting to track flights in real time for myself, so I didn't know this existed.

I invite you to share something you learned this week, whether tech related or not.

I learned how to do a silent install of SQL Server using Powershell.

I learned that the exercises from the chair exercise videos flooding social media are harder than they seem!

Happy Saturday!

Right. I had always ran nodes at the same side, but here, the passive nodes are smaller to save costs, and automatic failover is not enabled. Just was wondering what others commonly do.

So, my question isn't related to SQL Server licensing. It is about the cost of the VM in the cloud. If my primary is an r6i.4xl, and costs $1000/mth to run, do you also make your oassive seconday a .4xl? Or do you make it a .2xl or even .xl? Smaller size will cost less to run.

For folks using IaaS, when you have a failover cluster instance or AG, do you usually size the secondary node(s) smaller as a cost savings measure?

I feel like DBAs have to be multi-platform these days. The cloud seems to have made that a must.

I don't know if this is what you had in mind, probably broader than the example I'm about to give, but this made me think of how in tech I've often set out to solve 'x' problem and had to solve 3 others before I could solve 'x'.

All of these poll results seem upsetting, but given that this was only a few decades since the tumultuous 60's and 70, maybe not unsurprising.

Well, my journey with postgres has been rocky. I have ubuntu desktop with postgres on it. On 2 different VMs, I'm having a lot of problems with what seem to be OS/user setup issues that prevent me from following along with the videos or the book I have. Trying RHEL next.

Essentially, yes. When I click on a query on the left side of the UI, for some queries, nothing shows up inside the x/y axis on the right side as far as an icon for a plan. As a result, there's nothing to hover the mouse over to see runtime data. I need to circle back and query the raw data, too.

I still need to try the github code that was shared with me to look at the raw data. Maybe there are plans and execution info there, and they just don't show in the UI?

Interesting. Ok. I searched your blog and didn't find it, but I think this lack of blogs on this topic means therr is room for me to write on the topic. I may design my own tests and blog my findings.

I may set up a demo and contrast it to a trigger to do the same thing. I can measure perf with profiler or extended events.

I'm not sure with this feature. No blog I've read so far references there being a performance impact for this feature. That's in contrast to posta about triggers, replication, AGs, etc. The lack of reference to oerf issues for this feature is why I'm asking.

Has anyone blogged about any performance impact associated with temporal tables in SQL Server? I keep getting this question, and I tell people that I haven't seen any information that indicates there is a measurable impact.
