Part of the shock of John Brown’s attacks in Missouri in 1858 was that slave power was completely shocked by abolitionists standing up for themselves. It had always been assumed that the the slave owners were the protagonists and the abolitionists were just people who couldn’t move beyond words.

And that every act of aggression and transgression would be met with accommodation - because that's what had consistently happened for the past few decades.
