Trump may indeed just be stupid but I think there's no bigger manifestation of deep seated nativist hatred then forcing people into a permanent cycle of low-wage labour without any legal workplace protections.

The goal, never explicitly stated, is to have a deeply *insecure* workforce that lives in constant fear of deportation and can be more easily exploited.

But I fear that success increasingly hinges on things that aren't happening and haven't been happening to suddenly start happening against all precedent. I'd love to be wrong in my pessimism.

I'll concede: some of these could be gamechangers.

I am being serious. The early debate was pushed by Democrats because it was supposed to break people out of their complacency and made Americans realize the danger of Trump. That was the Democrat plan to get out of second place. It did not work.

I am very in favour of taking a lane and forcing cars to wait rather than hoping they won't kill me as they rush by. Also in favour of kicking and screaming at drivers who aren't paying attention. That said, I'd prefer to have a fucking bike lane.

Short of changing candidates, what is the Democratic party going to do between now and November to change this trajectory?

I am amazed that *even now* there are people in Can Lit academia whose priority is protecting Alice Munro's legacy rather than reckoning with what Andrea Skinner has had to live with.

Canada has had multiple minority governments and only one formal coalition (an "accord" technically but whatev). We came out OK. The push to force France's left parties into formal coalition with Macron is a recipe for disaster. It would be a betrayal of their voters and a gift to the fascists.

Framing a problem as deeply complex or insurmountable when the problem is "tech companies are spending billions on fancy autocomplete that is really bad for the environment and will likely never become profitable for them" is a bad journalistic choice.

I feel like that’s rarer now (would love to see some evidence either way). When I hear Boomers ranting about how “today’s kids are coddled” I think “I hope so. It’s good for parents to give a shit about their kids.”

Was thinking on this, and the truth of it, but I hope (maybe naively) that things are changing. As a child of the 70s I had many friends whose divorced parent would stand by their horrible abusive partner (though nothing as horrifying as what happened to Andrea Skinner).

Just a gentle reminder, please don't forget them. This war is a slaughter of children. The Lancet believes the death toll to be at 200k once all are found buried under rubble. Then there will be many more deaths from hunger, disease, injury and despair. Don't forget them.

I also fear this sort of response negates the fact that what happened was not a “few bad apples” but part of a system and culture that perpetuated (and perpetuates) this abuse. It might make you feel better to burn your copy of “Dear Life” but that’s not addressing the crisis.

Can’t speak to Grover or Kermit but as a child of the 70s I pre-date Elmo - and can report that Elmo was not a popular name before the muppet’s first appearance in the mid 80s

I think there’s definitely an aspect of “Let’s not let the truth ruin a good story” in both. But worse, a systematic refusal to listen to women and children, to discount what they say, and to punish them, rather than their abusers, when they speak out.

Should have said “from Leninist to Social Democratic” instead. Point being: He seems agnostic.

I think he’d be the first to say he’s a journalist not an advocate. I read it as noting that left organizations that have *some* form of organization tend to withstand external pressure better - whether Leninist or social democratic. The PT in Brazil, for eg, was covered with sympathy I thought.

So did her father, relations and others, including Munro biographers, who knew and said nothing. No one protected her. No one listened to her. A conspiracy of silence.

Have not read either biography but found a passage online, which I read hoping for some mention or explanation. Yet to find one, or any evidence that he ever raised the issue with Munro herself.

Horrifying the web of complicity and failure to protect, or even consider, Andrea Skinner. Parents and step-parents obviously, but consider this Munro biographer who just decided to ignore her letters.

The reported piece with extracts from the husband's letters is, if possible, even more sickening. Alice Munro was the great chronicler of how humans lie to ourselves + how we evade responsibility. The facts here should be included in every article about her life. www.thestar.com/news/in-the-...

It astounds me that people who claim to follow Jesus can look at these people, who are so clearly destined for(and deserving of) eternal damnation, and say, “That’s my team.”

Amazing to watch FPTP in action. Labour vote is down by 4 points and thousands of votes over 2017.

Interesting that he worked so hard to basically make Labour into (essentially) a warmed-over version of Theresa May's Tories and still didn't seem to attract those elusive "centrist" voters. He's winning on the splits.

True. I'd feel better if I saw any evidence that a dramatic game changer was in the offing. It was supposed to be this debate. The event that was supposed to shake things up and remind people of how bad Trump is, has actually increased his (already existing) polling lead.

Biden falling *another* point or two after a debate where he was *supposed to be turning things around* is very bad. I also fear that this is the start, not the end, of a downward trend.

I agree Trump's support is weak. He's not popular. I even agreed with the Democrat theory that an early debate would remind voters of what distasteful piece of shit Trump is. Unfortunately, Biden's performance was so bad that, instead, the focus turned to Biden - and not Trump (where it should be).

I feel like every day they’re doing a new unremarkable thing and then declaring, “see! Stop talking about the debate.” First it was a rally. Now a ten minute interview.
