Just incredible news on reviving Voyager I.
Think of it: a computer chip 15 billion(!) miles away is broken. The solution is to repackage & move key software, w/ code sent via radio signal that takes 22+ hrs to reach that little 46yr old machine.
AND IT IS WORKING.

Presumably they had some old hardware they tested the patch on. Then tested communication, and put the two together. Still amazing. I push firmware to devices through WiFi all the time but it’s in the same room.

As a man who works with relatively older machinery (20 years give or take in some cases) I am literally so impressed I had to stop and process how freaking brilliant this news is. Some people at NASA are due some praise and raises!

Old school engineering was really something else. I doubt it would be possible today given that everything depends upon layers on layers of random libraries.
