Nearly ten years ago, Toni Morrison wrote about the despair & dread she felt about the world. I need it again today:
"This is precisely the time when [we] go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear."

3/3 When we are talking about AI, we are talking about energy, water & the exploitation of people. “Listen, I would just be some random dude in India if I swapped places with my cousins, so using the word AI as some roundabout way to sell the labor of people that look like me is fucked up”

2/3 “Your business will be disrupted exactly as hard as it would have been if you had done nothing & much worse than it would have been if you just got your fundamentals right. Teaching your staff that they can get ChatGPT to write emails to stakeholders is not going to allow you to survive this.”

It was hard to leave, but I’m relieved to be home. After seven days of our USC Wrigley #Storymakers retreat, I am utterly exhausted - mentally and physically depleted - but more than anything, just profoundly grateful.

Hurricane Beryl went from a tropical depression to a Category 3 storm in just over 40 hours. It’s now Cat 4 with six to NINE feet of water above typical tide expected. "The 'generation gap' is an important social tool for any repressive society. If younger members of a community view older members as contemptible or suspect or excess, they will never be able to join hands and examine the living memory of the community, nor ask the question, 'Why?'" 1/2 Audre Lorde

The hallucinations should be disqualifying on their own. But the staggering exploitation of water, energy, and creative labor is something I am begging my friends in academia to foreground in their conversations about AI. Let’s get specific about what we are doing, why, and at what cost.

Look at me. Listen to me: If someone is selling you a "search" & "knowledge" "AI" product they claim is smarter & better & faster than you, but it literally cannot be guaranteed to give you simple true facts about consensus reality when asked, then that product DOES NOT WORK and SHOULD NOT BE USED.

Yes, I've read the stories about changes at the Stanford Internet Observatory. The story is a bit more nuanced than the current narrative, but yes, attacks on the field have played a role (tho less directly than it might seem). Let me be clear, our election + rumoring research at UW continues.

Libraries are one of the most radical social institutions we have, because they’re based on the idea that *everyone* has the right to information, for free. It’s also what makes them crucial to democracy. I will never stop yelling about this!

Poverty and perceived precarity, at their most basic level, ultimately serve to deprive folks from having time to be political subjects and having the resources to risk political actions. It’s by design. A world without extreme haves and have nots is a world that actually has to do democracy.

It takes tremendous skill to do improv well & many trainers out there offering training for scientists. (I think it can be great, but it’s tricky. Happy to share suggestions) But in this conversation, I wanted to dig deeper into the idea that improv offers a way to rehearse our courage.
