IMHO, "trope" is "our readers know the basic idea, so we don't have to explain from scratch why it's this way", vs. "cliché" which is "we don't have to put ANY effort into explaining it, this is what ALWAYS happens!"

A trope is a literary device, say a penchant for a certain kind of figurative language ( consider swear words as figurative) A cliche is a figure that’s so overused that it has no strength ( ex.playful as a kitten) It’s about use of language: interesting or stale/cringe
