it is, according to the folks I've read, the only place on the planet with precisely this kind of crater. and of course there's a major battle fought there.

a critical battle scene in a unique crater impact zone would seem, in fiction, unlikely, wouldn't it? And if Louis the German's forces hadn't killed Adalbert of Metz there, the outcome of the civil war would have been very different. So of course we needed a map.
