The message, about morning, the way it is sung, as simple as can be, a homeless sentence and a country step towards a future worth having. Like holding a young child on a wall to see the sea for the first time, at dawn, the world's thought-task vast, and simple, and irreversible. Peter Riley

Peter Riley, from Truth, Justice and the Companionship of Owls

A book about a sort of homecoming, a reckoning, and a re-cognition.

'The hope extant in one blind rhyme.'

Another wonderful book from @longbarrowpress.bsky.social

May is still May. Days can stay light
Longer, and with the coming of a Yorkshire spring
Comes a constitution not of taker but giver,
Comes a Yorkshire washed of Westminster's
Neglect and running down

The burbots of Guthlac, biting out proofs from benthic
Huguenot Bibles: O smite the land for the water’s sake:
the dreaming of the eelish heart is evil from its youth.

The last of 148 pages of sustained brilliance. #ecopoetry as epic. The kind of bloody, visceral, relentlessly rigorous book I wish I'd written. The kind of book that takes craft *and* graft. Steve Ely, I'm jealous. You can buy it from @longbarrowpress.bsky.social if you are tempted.

Midsummer dark-moon, black belly
of the Went. Clouds heavy with thunder,
a tremor of distant horses. Glyphosate
drifting down from the rape on a crisp bag.

Flat sump boxed by seven rivers—Ouse
and Trent, Idle, Torne, Don, Aire and Went.
Winding and doodling over their warps,
slow broadening to Humber.

Sky darkens bright with ancient light from uncountable
pinprick galaxies, where ‘Oumuamua is lost in space,
swept blind in the Big Bang’s current. A little eel
slips off, begins to make her way downstream.

"There are gaps in my childhood, things I can’t account for, the primary tests. I disliked supervision, I didn’t want to show what I had learned. I didn’t want to amount to anything. I pieced together a complete copy of myself with the pages torn out of an exercise book." ('Red Flags')

if you want to make books by hand, you can begin by folding a sheet of paper once: a very basic book form, four sides, one following the next. you now understand the difference between the book and the sheet, which is that the book takes place in time.
