We should not have been made able to know how fucking stupid and evil so many random regular people are, you used to just have to kind of eye ball it, big picture-wise, and convince yourself it was not a whole deal.
Too often it feels like technology has merely magnified the scale and scope of the same self serving, myopic behavior that’s existed from our inception - and enabled access to information which exposes (but does not change) that reality.
I was on a D&D forum years ago called ENWorld that had a "grandma rule," i.e. you couldn't say anything that would upset the founder's grandma.
So, there was a whole other forum, Circus Maximus for posts where people could say what they really thought. Most of them were evil assholes.
I now walk among people and see the children of slave owners, the industrialists who thought Hitler was vulgar but good for business, and brown shirts in waiting.
