Spirit Summons are a mechanic that FromSoft put into the game. Meaning that, yes, you ARE okay to use them or not.

Yup, if they're there, then they're entirely fair game and you can define your playstyle from there based on preference I had a lot of fun messing around with each summon to see what they did, but there are also people more than happy to just stick to their ol' reliable greatsword or whatever
