Also: נאַסקייט/naskeyt is not in the dictionary, but I hoped to match the poetic strangeness in the English. And I struggled with "beyond words" at the end. I'm not confident that מחוץ/ mekhuts has the same nuance as "beyond" in English, but my other option was ווײַטער פון, which I liked even less.

Translation notes: I thought hard about the use of מקורים/mekoyrim for "original texts". It means "source", and I've only encountered it in English - in the context of source texts for Talmud study. I thought: if I use it here, will it bring a Talmudic flavour that isn't in the English? And if so...

It's worth checking your public library's Kanopy as well if you have a library card - I don't have university access, but luckily my city's library has half a dozen Yiddish films 😁

This! For many of us who are reclaiming Yiddish in varius ways, it is vritually impossible to pick up a "pure" Yiddish, let alone the Yiddish that would have been spoken by our ancestry, if we let that be the reason we don't learn, or progress more slowly I think we are doing us a disservice.

I had genuinely never considered this (even as a UK transplant to Canada whose own accent is slowly evolving), and it's such a good point! Yet another great reason to love your mixed-up accent, in Yiddish or any other language ❤️

Today I fulfilled a long-held ambition to take my kids to a steam rally - we were nearly scuppered by the weather, but the rain let up and we even saw some sun! Stay tuned for possibly the first ever review of Hollowell Steam Rally in Yiddish later today.For now, here's a photo of a traction engine.

This is a good point 😂 I tried to look up which books have been translated, but if you search "Roald Dahl Yiddish" you have to scroll through a lot of results about his antisemitism...not the best look for his Yiddish publisher, whoever that is 😳

Oh that's interesting - thanks for the info! I only have his Jerome K Jerome so far and I don't know if that was grant-funded (I'm also travelling). I still think it's a bit different from a publishing house buying translation rights, but I take your point that it's also not completely independent.
