I get the argument that we're essentially voting for a Democratic bookmark, not someone we actually believe can do the job until January 2029. And I'll do that unhesitatingly if I have to. The thing is, nobody should have to. And after last night, nobody can pretend we're doing anything but that.

So what is the process for putting Kamala in the front seat? Because it’s gotta be her, right?

If "doing the job" means holding your own in a poorly overseen debate with Donald trump, few if any would qualify for the job.

I will also do it without hesitation, even as I also agree no one should have to. But I also think it’s fair, especially for anyone worried about another Trump term, to suspect that “vote for a placeholder” will not be the message that gets the placeholder a second term…

It's the same as all the other arguments we have. "You can't base your vote on an issue, or a policy, or a candidate. You can only vote against fascism." It's probably true, but it's not democracy! The people saying this stuff need to grapple with the implications of that.

Every Republican I know hated Trump but voted for him so he could pack the Supreme Court with conservative judges, and look how that's working out for them. I hope Democrats bring that same energy in November, because elections have consequences decades beyond any presidency.
