I get the argument that we're essentially voting for a Democratic bookmark, not someone we actually believe can do the job until January 2029. And I'll do that unhesitatingly if I have to. The thing is, nobody should have to. And after last night, nobody can pretend we're doing anything but that.
I will also do it without hesitation, even as I also agree no one should have to. But I also think it’s fair, especially for anyone worried about another Trump term, to suspect that “vote for a placeholder” will not be the message that gets the placeholder a second term…
It's the same as all the other arguments we have. "You can't base your vote on an issue, or a policy, or a candidate. You can only vote against fascism."
It's probably true, but it's not democracy! The people saying this stuff need to grapple with the implications of that.
Every Republican I know hated Trump but voted for him so he could pack the Supreme Court with conservative judges, and look how that's working out for them. I hope Democrats bring that same energy in November, because elections have consequences decades beyond any presidency.
