Barbara Retz was a badass nazi-fighter. She was connected to the Easter Rising, arrested & imprisoned with the other women in Richmond Barracks in 1916, and remained involved during the Irish War of Independence In 1938 she was arrested for her part in an anti-Nazi rally in Berlin.

Last night I was sat with an old friend on a hill outside Bangor, overlooking the Menai straits, when a couple of lads walked past. One double-backed and introduced himself. Turns out I taught him 15 years ago. These moments are very rare but they always make my day.

Oh there were yoga and mindfulness classes as well, usually scheduled during core teaching hours and on a different campus. These were the dark days before mental health support dogs arrived.

Indirectly I accept some responsibility as former UCU H&S officer (until 2018) where one of my last acts was to persuade the powers that they needed to have a mental health policy. Until then there was literally no recognition.

I would love to know the results of reviewing full proposals without a CV. It seems odd that we increasingly move toward double-masked reviewing of manuscripts but worry so much less about biases when handing out the funding to do said research.
