People have pointed to times like My Lai that illegal orders WERE obeyed (true) so, clarification: She's describing a bad-novel scenario where the President could simply order SEAL team 6 to murder any American he pointed to and they would just do it. No, they would not.

Fortunately, as a former military officer, I lose zero sleep over such ideas because even if the President were insane enough to say them, no one would carry them out. Sotomayor's hyperbolic comment was deeply insulting to all of us.

But they only cause the irritation. There's no evidence they've changed any minds, unless you count making people madder at THEM.

You're welcome. I do space writing (including book reviews for Ad Astra a long time ago) and the state of space reporting in the general media is dismal. mattbille.blogspot.com/2024/06/spac...

Not following. Flooding and jamming the courts means it will take years to get any wins. Isn't it much better to target the most important cases, so you get decisions before you die of old age?

Thanks for posting. So much of the press gets space terribly wrong. "They're stranded! They'll have to be rescued!" "Boeing and NASA knew it was a deathtrap!"

For Nautilus Magazine, I wrote about a question that has obsessed me: What are the oldest surviving ecosystems on Earth?

Turns out some extant meadows, reefs, and rainforests have persisted for hundreds of thousands to *tens of millions* of years.

What can they teach us?

Well, people like Musk start with romantic reasons, but the first things his people have developed involve massive old-fashioned business opportunities in launch and global communications, grabbed by moving faster and taking more risks. No large-scale mining for decades, though: can't make $.

That's pretty good. The Antarctic Treaty is a logical beginning, and the Moon Treaty drew on it and the Law of the Sea Treaty, but there's no indication a global deal will be accomplished. Nation-states remain responsible for the actions of their citizens (including their corporations).

I can't access it, but the stated rationale is that people for whom mass transit does not work for getting to their jobs, for whatever reason, would pay $3600 /year they could not afford. While the real reason is likely elections, do you have a thought on that cost?

As an ex-GOP voter, I'm telling everyone Biden is the only choice we've got. Of the two other prominent candidates, one is an irrational anti-science egotist with a famous name, and the other is.. huh, that's interesting.

Hope this isn't self-aggrandizing: First major SF story MC wasn't intended to be lesbian, she just was. My lesbian daughter reviewed: then friend LJ Hachmeister, L SF writer/activist, died, and her widow ok'd revising the character as a homage. I never set out to add representation, just write well.

MAGA of course, but Administration didn't help: constant policy changes, changing claims of what exec orders could do, no vaccination requirements (why?), calling concerns/fears bigotry vs never trying hard to engage and explain why this was a positive thing. Needed a dedicated Presidential address.

Superb, haunting article. Rather than building to fit the harsh environment, they built a typical Soviet town and tried controlling the environment with dams and permafrost-freezing systems. A lesson in hubris for all of us.

We can't just call antivaxxers dumb: It's not like we learned virology, immunology, or trial design in high school. We DID (in mainstream, not advanced classes) learn scientific thought/methods, principles of vaccination, and history of beating epidemics. It's weird they forget or disregard that.

I'm leading two papers on space history. One is on the technical options for retrieving the Vanguard 1 satellite from orbit. The second is on the broader question of whether we should retrieve artifacts like Vanguard 1 for study/display on Earth or study them in place only. Inputs welcome!

I was an ICBM crew commander, and everyone I knew watched it and thought it plausible and effective. The idea some people in the nuclear deterrence field quit their work, though, is probably later invention, as I never even heard a rumor.

They were very effective, though I caution "saved the world" is iffy. Their showings in the Communist world were milked for propaganda effect, with no known effect on leaders. The impact on Reagan was real, but the book Apocalypse Television tried hard to show TDA led to INF and couldn't.
