Two very different ages of juvenile eastern bluebird, both photographed the same day, both super cute. #birds

Eastern bluebird bringing fresh material to the nest. I hoped for a picture of a head poking out, but got distracted and missed it.

Have they tried not being solid bright white? Seriously, you can see them from a literal half mile away when every other bird is invisible.

Thanks! Landed maybe 30 feet away and walked toward me until I couldn't fit the whole bird in the frame. I'm not sure if this is how they hunt (for depth perception?), a threat display, or what

I believe this is a golden-winged skimmer, though it could be a Needham's (and feel free to set me straight). Dragonfly density at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge was incredible, and they were all headed east (toward the dunes and beach) in the morning, west in the evening.

Agreed, @evolutionpirate.bsky.social clued me in to this, which I'd never heard of, and I was fooled by the jiggling. I have a nice video of this, but I guess that's not supported on Bluesky?

Reviewing the video, I can believe I was fooled by the movement imparted by the bird. Thanks; this makes so much more sense now!

Can anyone tell me what this Carolina wren is removing (yes, removing; I watched it happeb twice) from the nest?
Definitely alive, because it was wriggling. Some kind of pupa? Why remove it instead of, say, eat it or feed to the babies?

What’s to note?
SG (Small Grants) changed to STAR - new acronym with more $, now $400k. Great for theory, synthesis, postdoc initiated ideas, etc. Only 10 pages too.
