If #PrEP had been available in the 1990s I would not be living with HIV now.
It’s more effective HIV prevention than condoms.
PrEP users should be praised not shamed.

It's no surprise that Suella Braverman is hostile to the Pride Progress Flag and anything that indicates support for LGBTQ+ people and communities.
But she is misled or misleading to claim gender affirmative surgery is available for children - it is not.

On this day in 1981 the first mainstream media report of what would come to be known as AIDS was published on page 20 of the New York Times.
The epidemic has now taken the lives of 700,000 Americans out of an estimated 40 million AIDS deaths globally.
And it is not over yet.

Today marks the 55th anniversary of the first night of the Stonewall Riots.
Although #Stonewall was not the beginning of the LGBTQ rights movement (named differently throughout history) it was seen as pivotal and it is the reason #Pride is celebrated at this time of year.

Three years before Stonewall, trans women and drag queens led a confrontation between queers and the Police.
The Comptons Cafeteria riot was ignited when a police officer tried to arrest a trans woman and she threw her coffee in his face.
The press deemed it too obscene to cover.

Zero infections in trial of ‘2 injections per year’ PrEP!
It’s not a vaccine - but it’s as good, or better.
This gives us the power to end new cases of HIV.
Now to ensure access for all.

30 years ago, while Section 28 was still stifling LGBTQ+ representation, the C4 soap Brookside broadcast the UK’s first pre-watershed lesbian kiss.
Great piece by Nicola Stephenson on this historic moment in TV history, which she shared with Anna Friel.

By her own account, Marsha P Johnson was not there the first night of the riots (and, according to her, Sylvia Riviera was never there).
Marsha and Sylvia earned their place in history as advocates for queers, trans people, sex workers and the homeless, irrespective of Stonewall.

The Stonewall Riots continued for almost a week.
The Mattachine Society of New York, at the time a leading homosexual rights group (some homosexual men were unhappy with the term ‘gay’), pleaded with the protestors to stop. They did not believe a riot helped the cause.

Arguments about ‘who threw the first brick at Stonewall’ are confounded by witness accounts that testify that no bricks were involved, but coins, cans and small stones.
Several accounts (inc. her own) report the protest was ignited by butch dyke / drag king Stormé DeLarverie.

The Stonewall Riots began when patrons of a mob-run, low rent gay bar in New York’s West Village said, “Enough!”
Prominent among the rioters were dykes, sex workers, trans women and drag queens.
Many rioters were already seen as the lowest of the low, they had ‘nothing to lose’.

There were trans women at Stonewall.
There were trans women at the first Pride rally in London.
I marched with trans women on Section 28 protests in the 1980s.
Our communities, our activism and our Pride histories are intertwined.

A safe, available and effective cure for HIV is probably at least a decade away - and even that’s optimistic.
Personally, I don’t think I’ll ever be cured and I’m fine with that.
Secure treatment access for all and tackling stigma are more important to me.

Section 28, an amendment to the Local Government Act banning the ‘promotion of homosexuality’, was law in 1999.
We questioned, was the Museum vulnerable if the exhibition went ahead?
We will never know how much LGBT affirmative work never came to pass as a result of self-censorship.

I had been diagnosed with HIV just a couple of months before my proposal for Pride and Prejudice was accepted, although I told nobody this.
I thought it may be the last thing I achieved. I would not have imagined then that I would survive as long as I have, nor guessed the turns my life would take.
