Has anyone ever pointed out that corporations can’t be persons under the 13th Amendment, which bans slavery? A person can’t be owned by other people. There is no evidence that the drafters of the 14th Amendment intended to create an exception for corporations. I know originalism is BS, but still…

I have a crazy idea: if your industry can’t be profitable without deceiving customers and/or forcing workers to take lower wages through non-competes, maybe your industry shouldn’t exist. Of course, you could stop buying back stocks and overpaying executives to improve profits…. But what do I know?

Serious question: I agree with you that the filibuster should be abolished. But, is there some essential value to it, regardless of other policy desires? Or is the filibuster just a shield to excuse failures to enact policies? The latter seems most likely to me, but I hate being cynical.

This kind of exploitation is so common, especially where creatives are trying to pursue their passions. Companies exploit our passions for profit for the executives and owners. Hell, they exploit the tendency most of us have to take pride and give passion to our work, whatever the job is. /1

I’ve been clean for almost 7 years, and I’ve watched the growth of legal sports betting with a combination of fear and frustration. The gambling industry exploits addiction, plain and simple. Thanks for the article; it’s one of the only instances of pushback I’ve seen.

I agree. It has been literally a 40-50 year project to try to create a permanent Republican majority, working from local elections to state leg to fed. When I was in law school 20 years ago I saw the infrastructure to produce right wing lawyers who would go on to judgeships. It’s a lot to undo!
