I have previously read was that the original plan for RJ Brande was that he would be the Martian Manhunter, who had lived up to the 30th century. The plan was ditched before it was revealed, though.

It's not a bad idea for a character in the Legion's time, I'd say, but not the Legion's financial backer. The Legion should be founded by the kids themselves, with the aid of the benefactor they rescued. But it's them, inspired by the past. Not someone from the past secretly pulling the strings.
