That... scent... turned me off OSR as a whole for a long time. I'm sure it's done the same for other folks; when I finally played Shadowdark (for instance) at a con I was surprised to find it a fun, pacey romp, great at pulling a pickup table together. Gatekeeping doesn't help—just keeps folks out.

I know plenty of people who play OSR and aren't like that at all, natch. It just does seem to gather some of that flotsam into one place sometimes (but also this is a subset still highly active on Twitter, so)
