Have been getting our 1st graders outside for a bug hunt this week! They’ve caught & observed lots of creeping, crawling, flying insects and are very proud.

It’s National Poetry Month! Our 4th & 5th graders read “How to Write a Poem” and created some of their own found/collage poetry. Lots of kids (and adults) find poetry intimidating, and found poems lift the initial “idea” burden and free young poets up to create!

I’m collaborating with our science teacher for this year’s “science fest.” This activity helped students hone in on giving precise directions, a skill that to transfer to their “procedure” when ready to test their hypothesis. It was such a hit, some of them chose to do it during free time!

Mexikid was my last read of 2023, & one of my favorites of the year. Absolutely LOL hilarious, wacky, heart achy…all the best parts of a memoir from this age and stage with a really amazing POV from a not-Mexican enough (he thinks) American kid on an unreal road trip with his family. A must-read!

I’m about halfway through this collection of essays, and it’s so good. Personal, hilarious- just the right beats of humor and reflection. One of those books that I think about reading all day while I’m at work. Somehow missed “Here for It” but that’s on my list now, too.

I’m so sorry that you’re also dealing with this issue in your area! I’ve found the podcast confirms a lot of what I knew or suspected. The problem I’m seeing close to home is the use of catch phrases that seem positive, but are meant as leverage for restricting access to materials.

1st graders had the BEST time making zip lines for stuffed animals in library class today. I highly recommend “Mazie’s Amazing Machines” as a read aloud that will get kid engineers excited to create! Author Sheryl Haft’s website is full of videos and printable activity ideas.

We added a guinea pig to our family in Oct- now have 4 pets for 4 people. It’s fun & fuzzy around our house, aka the petting zoo. Meet: Pepper Pig, Millie Dog, Oliver Cat, & Tulip the Mini Rex. Prey & predators definitely do not mix, but so far everyone is safe & spoiled. Would ❤️ to see your pets!
