The first one is the best but the sequels are good too! The author has also hinted about a possible 4th one day. I also enjoyed his Lords of Uncreation trilogy. Book 1 is Shards of Earth.

I don't think the pushback against talent is meant to be bad, and WAY too many people quit stuff if they aren't good at something right away, and that is a problem. But talents do exist. Otherwise, everyone who works hard would be the same level.

Agreed. There is definitely an element of hard work in skill. 20+ years of martial arts has made me "pretty good" but there are people who after a couple years are already better in a lot of ways. It's not a lack of enjoyment or work on my part. It just is the way it is. I am fine with it.

But people do have innate talent and abilities that make learning certain skills much easier than it does for others. I watch it with the kids in my karate class constantly and in other aspects of life. Some people pick things up right away, and some don't.
