Forgive me SQ, but I would personally agree with Rachel's assessment. That was my first reaction that people pleasing is a reaction to trauma, not an attempt (even tacitly) to manipulate others. While I don't know your beliefs, I would suggest praying to God as ask Him to show you the real truth.
