Europhile boomer who appreciates how lucky I am. London accent with Yorkshire twinges, but heart in Galway. Savage cynic, no prisoners. Tax is the price you pay for a civilised society.

We've all seen too many 'nasty Gestapo' war movies. Time we grew up.

It would work with that basic info being compulsory, with additional optional data, like say allergies, blood type or GP details, next of kin, etc, at the card holders discretion.

Most people's objections are. It's not necessarily a back door to a Gestapo state. I presume the police would need an excuse to stop you and ask for it, a bit like stop and search.

It seems to me ID cards are a no-brainer, given the credit cards we use, phones, NPR and town centre cameras, etc. They are the norm in many European countries without any fuss. We need to get over Dickie Attenborough in The Great Escape The real debate is what info they contain.

There may be a way of diffusing that. Write to local authorities to say "We need to build x new houses in your area. Where do you want us to build them? You've got 2 months to come up with a plan, otherwise we will impose a decision on you." Responsibility (or failure) rests with local councils.

@cindynorth1.bsky.social Do you realise Cindy Lou was the original title of Peggy Sue before Buddy Holly changed it.
You could have been famous. 😃

A friend of mine was born in one. He took me to the Museum of the Japanese American last time I was in LA. That's also a good source.

I don't know if its Starmer's strategy to lower our expectations so much that he can't fail to exceed them. If so, he has been very successful.

I think their ability to grow will be determined by the Labour Govt. If it manages to make people feel better, Reform are toast. If not....

No Govt with a majority big enough to force through electoral reform will change the system that got them into power.

No surprise for an election in the middle of the holidays, and with overseas voting for the first time.

Not sure it's to keep foreigners out. It's probably to keep us in, doing all the dirty jobs he wouldn't soil his hands with.

Granting planning permission increases cost/value of land approx 10-fold...merely by administrative stroke of a pen. This cannot be allowed to continue.

The bigger question for me is, after an (inevitable) united Ireland, will Fine Gael and Fianna Fail run candidates in the 6 counties? It could be electoral suicide for them to leave the field free for SF, but a tough call. Given Ireland's voting system, Unionists could hold balance of power in Dáil.

It is also a universal law that 2 women will spend 30 minutes on the telephone for a conversation that 2 men would complete in 3 minutes. In this house anyway!

Also remember the US didn't namely enter the war against Germany to free Europe. They only did so after Hitler declared war on them on 11th December in the aftermath of Pearl Harbour. Hardly the cavalry riding to Europe's rescue they like to pretend.

It's a shame Americans don't know the difference between going to church/reading the Bible and actually living your life with real Christian values. At least the two-faced Ireland I grew up in has copped on a bit.

Or to put it another way, Corbyn lost 2 elections, the first relatively narrowly, the second disastrously. And please take that 'relentlessly smeared' record off. The Tory press do it to all Labour leaders.

It'll be dwarfed by the number of people who come back to Labour because Corbyn isn't there.

You have been fucked since honest, decent people couldn't get elected, because money dominates your politics, buys your politicians and it's too late to change that now. Also, because you don't know the difference between going to church and being a Christian.
