Everyone will read their own bits into this, but it ties together so much I see, like a bunch of people telling jamelle bouie if he was truly a good person he'd quit writing for the new york times, since they are so bad on many issues

This is true in my small town too. The absolute worst thing you can be is even a smidgen closer to the center (and usually for very practical reasons like you live in the actual world and need to interact with actual people) than the purest person on the town Facebook group.

Though, that dynamic isn't limited to online spaces, plus it isn't new. I'm early GenX (US) and it's been around as long as I've been paying attention. I assume it pre-dates my short life span as well.
