(Preaching to the choir): There always has to be a way for the audience to identify with the character(s), for the reader to be invested. Surfer is a visual spectacle but gets "too cosmic", removes itself from the reader via dialect, location, even costumes. Fun worlds to visit, but not to stay.

Agree they were phoning it in at that point. But I think it also snuck by because (I believe) their rule was blood could not be red (only present on the axe in black) and the "disembodied" head has none dripping from it? Just an semi-educated guess.
