I wouldn’t rule out that possibility. I was told Obama’s first debate as an incumbent was a disaster too but I have no recollection of it.

It was. Actually somewhat similar. It was his anniversary and he seemed completely out of it. Of course, Obama didn’t come in with the doubts that Biden did, but the pundits were equally sure he was done after that debate.
