I spent a couple of years during the pandemic living in Clacton. The town itself was surprisingly welcoming and diverse (for Essex), but it has the misfortune of being in a constituency with Walton and Frinton - which are both full of ancient busy-bodies.

Yeah. The election of Trump certainly emboldened a lot of them, but even before that. One of the things that I keep thinking back to is how often 'irony' was used as a cover for people saying the worst sort of thing.

I grew up near there. You would not believe how horrific some of the people in that area are. One of the most shocking moments I ever experienced was people I'd known since childhood as very kind and decent going full mask-off racist and bigot during the last 10-15 years

She's one of the best bits of the modern MCU, and has the charisma and charm to carry a franchise on her own.

That's OK, simply being amusing is enough. It was just such an odd circumstance that your post popped into my feed after I'd been thinking about it, that it seemed worth the follow. Plus I'm always happy to read the thoughts of people better versed in politics than me.

Very fair. And it's rather depressing how often those groups are still marginalised today. Often shrugged off by the people doing the marginalising as 'a joke'

Oddly, I was thinking about this last night. Particularly given how the nazis targeted trans people, and they're conspicuously absent from the poem. (Not a criticism of the poem, but it's a thought that has been swimming around my head for a day).

In some ways it feels a lot like a manufactured effort to suppress the vote amongst groups most likely to oppose trump. Like a more sophisticated version of this

14 fucking years arguing with tories online, begging people to stop advocating to hurt marginalised groups, and before I've even had a chance to breathe, every 'leftist' in the world seems angry at me for being glad and relieved the tories are gone. Jesus fucking christ. No wonder we keep losing.

I spent several years of my life living twenty minutes drive from a town called Fingrinhoe. Sometimes I genuinely wonder why anyone ever took the UK seriously.

Most of my solution involves providing the support to people I know that the state has removed (driving them to hospital, cooking dinner, being present with them when they're feeling suicidal etc). The writing to the MP was the easier bit.

Yeah, that's understandable. I just feel like losing all hope will make it come faster. But your point is very fair.

'Celebrating' wasn't the right word, to be honest. More like sighing in temporary relief and catching my breath. I know the fight won't end. For a while, at least.

I'm literally an anarchist. I have no faith in parties, or the state. But I also understand that mutual aid alone doesn't suffice. And at least trying is better than not.

I didn't tell people to vote for them. I said tomorrow morning, write to them. I'm not advocating voting for Labour. I literally just chipped in to a guy who asked for what to do with a suggestion.

I've also been around for long enough to know these people are awful. But honestly,I just can't deal with everyone on the left just giving up. Most of my spare time is spent providing support to friends whose mental and physical health has been destroyed by them being targeted by the tories...

Then keep doing it. Every fucking day. Turn up to their offices. Make them read the multiple accademic criticisms of the Cass report. Because just throwing your hands up doesn't help.

Didn't realise it was a reply to you, as I thought it was only mentioning the guy I replied to. Sorry. It's not the whole plan. Most of my plan involves continuing what I'm doing, which is mutual aid for the people around me. But it's one thing that isn't hopeless.

Definitely worth writing to her so you know you support her views though. I think we often underestimate the power of things like lobbying your local MP, because marches etc feel more effective. Even if they're not.

Mind if I chip in here? Because there is one thing we can do that will make things better. At least stands a chance. Tomorrow morning write to your MP and explain to them that your vote for them was contingent on them not fucking over trans people. Because there will be terfs doing just that.

You're shouting at the wrong person there, you cretin. I've spent most of my adult life being called an anti-semite for protesting for Palestianan rights. I'm also well-versed in it enough to know that Republicans are far more fucking dangerous than Democrats. Grow up you fucking child.

You're literally calling for people to not vote. Which is one of the most effective techniques used by people who wanted a Republican victory in 2016. You might as well be wearing a fucking Maga hat.

Because you still *are* endorsing it. That's the fucking point. Being all high and mighty is exactly the same as the Democrats 'rising above'. And your inability to understand that seems willful at this point.

I don't think he's done 'good things'. I just don't think he's as bad as the guy who is far worse. And yes, it absolutely plays into the shitty electoral strategy of the Dems, but the time to work against that is between elections, not during them when the choices are a murderer or a worse one.

Ben Mortimer's avatar Ben Mortimer @montimer.bsky.social

Ah yes. Because I think Trump is literally as bad as Hitler, I must love Biden. Ffs. And yeah, he should. He should use that power he now has to unfuck everything. But as he won't, the important thing now is keeping out the person who will use it to make things worse.

The whole world should be ashamed that it's even got to this point. But it doesn't negate the fact that Trump would be even worse. And that not taking part isn't 'action'. It might make you feel less shitty, but it hurts everyone more.

Yep. And he should. And the electoral college. If he weren't a coward he could unilaterally unfuck everything with the stroke of a pen.

Ben Mortimer's avatar Ben Mortimer @montimer.bsky.social

Honestly, you should be ashamed. Because the result of letting Trump in again will be catastrophic. The reason the far right have captured so much power is what they've done in between elections, and to counteract that the left need to do the same. But that can't happen under Trump.

Yep. Most of the change doesn't happen at the ballot box. It happens between electoral cycles. Usually unannounced. Elections are for picking your enemy.
