Yeah it's hard because you don't want to find yourself demoted to "spooky" like some cast-off Tim Burton project, and the term "urban fantasy" comes with all those assumptions about mysteries, romance, a bunch of other stuff.

absolutely, yeah. i've defaulted to calling mine 'a coming-of-age mystery with horror elements', bc it does have mystery and romance and all that, but urban fantasy just does NOT ring true. and i still worry that people are going to assume tim burton spooky and get an unpleasant surprise haha
