If you haven't read Karl Edward Wagner yet, his Kane stories are closer to the classic thud & blunder sword-and-sorcery than, say, Elric, but they also have a Moorcock-level authorial voice, they might be up your alley

I recall Thongor being more technically competent than Kothar and the Magic Sword (an AD&D Appendix N classic that's largely similar) but not having the environmental weirdness to make the generic protagonist interesting.

I say this as someone who tried and failed to comfortably integrate the D&D3 monk with "generic fantasy," you can't do it, you can only do gonzo fantasy so you need to add more stuff like the monk. A class for Spocks and Doctors Who. Gray aliens as a player race. Rocket sleds vs pterodactyls.
