July 4, 1979 Loggers in the area have reported seeing steam coming from Mount St. Helens. Is St. Helens alive again? Gifford Pinchot National Forest staff confirmed there was no steam; it was just windblown snow off the peak. There is no sign the volcano, dormant for 122 years, is waking up. Yet.

I answered a good question on Threads about whether there were any signs of St. Helens reawakening before March 1980. Well, not really. A background level of earthquakes was captured throughout the 1970s, but nothing unique from other Cascade peaks.
