Remember, a large portion of silent films are lost, not due to decay or fires, but because they were intentionally junked by their studios. Among the worst was Paramount, aka CBS/Paramount. People come and go. Corporate culture is forever.

Oh and those nitrate fires? Safety film existed in the 1910s but studios didn’t want to pay that extra few cents a foot.
They did this knowing fires were a constant danger to the public. They have a lot of deaths on their hands.

Honestly, any politician who ran on and passed a Media Preservation Act that made the government keep, store, and be allowed to stream any movie/TV that isn't streamed elsewhere would never lose an election.

Terry Jones and another Python snuck into BBC Studios & STOLE all the Monty Python tapes. We’d have never seen them in the states if they hadn’t, cuz they were about to junk them all.
