Live action and animation is as old as animation - 1900, with the Enchanted Drawing. Of course the process got better with time (and the invention of animation cells). Max Fleischer was rotoscoping his Koko the Clown series, the same year this Mutt and Jeff came out.

My grandma had a tape when I was a kid with Mutt and Jeff cartoons on it, and I’ve always been sad that I’ve never been able to reconnect with them.
