I guess it’s “interesting” living in an authoritarian state where you have to be careful what you say around your neighbors or colleagues to avoid them snitching on you to the Stasi because they’re pissed that your dog ran on their lawn or something, but I’d prefer a more mundane life

I study this s—t for my job, and I do not think that it is good or healthy for ordinary citizens to have to vote, act, etc., like their rights and perhaps lives are on the line in every election

In fairness, GOP has (at least until now) more openly hostile toward the ICC, though lots of Dem electeds are ICC skeptics (~40% of House Dems and >50% Senate Dems signed letters in 2020 calling for Trump admin to take action vs Court after Afghanistan investigation was announced)

The PA has ratified the Kampala Amendments, but for aggression, the Court's jurisdiction only applies if both the aggressor and the victim state are States Parties (except in cases of a UNSC referral).

There is a pretty strong argument that, had Columbia’s president done the politically smart thing and not testified voluntarily, this situation would not have escalated as it did…the presidents are incompetent or they want justification to crack down on their students

I think, in this situation, an ICC warrant is probably unlikely to generate further incentives to escalate to hold on to power, because he already has pretty strong such incentives given that he's on trial domestically (which I think has been underemphasized as a factor explaining his behavior)
