The Claudine Gay "plagiarism scandal" shows the power of an outlet like the Times choosing a story they want to hammer over and over via these sort of notifications. Could easily choose to do that for any number of Trump's alarming and unpopular proposals but they just... dont'!
I assume its a little out of date but I remember reading a while back that the number 2 most visited news site by Americans was msn-dot-com, which basically no media critics or left wing politicians ever monitored or cared about (and frequently featured reactionary propaganda)
I was impatient with people who argued that Trump voters were taking their cues from the NYT in 2014-2016 and it pisses me off that they weren’t as wrong as I thought
Which stories major news outlets choose to emphasize and push to their readers seems both far more consequential and far more indicative of the owners' political preferences than, for example, official endorsements by editorial boards.
Their embrace of EM at DealBook was the last straw for me (and my subscription dollars.) I got out just before that one blew up. They sadly continue to prove my decision correct.
